Techgnosis - Thought-provoking AR Mask — Instagram Filter Review
Published on Jun 11, 2019
| Filter name: "Techgnosis"
Techgnosis is yet another fantastic IG reflective face mask by Johanna Jaskowska, the person behind Beauty3000 filter. The first thing I wanted to know before even trying the filter, what's the meaning of the word "Techgnosis".
After searching for things related to this word, I came across a book with the same starting name, called "TechGnosis: Myth, Magic, and Mysticism in the Age of Information" by Erik Davis (Amazon). Not that I am directly implying a direct connection, still, I wanted to find out more. This book talks about our fascination with technology in relation to religious imagination. It tells a story about a cult that believes ina co-evolution of technology with the urge for transcendence and the supernatural, the technological subconscious.
From the book's description via Amazon: "Davis uncovers startling connections between such seemingly disparate topics as electricity and alchemy; online roleplaying games and religious and occult practices; virtual reality and gnostic mythology; programming languages and Kabbalah". You can find more about this book on Amazon.
Already ordered the book myself after reading its introduction. If you look at the book's cover, you can see some patterns. If Johanna was inspired by the book itself, without reading any of her introduction about the filter (which I couldn't find), they look quite related. I mean, the topic and the visual patterns as seen on the book's cover. They might not be, but I still felt the need to point it out.
'Techgnosis' filter also inherits the look of her popular filter Beauty3000. It uses a beautiful reflective face mask with dynamic lighting that highlights the pattern texture on the face as the light moves through it. The texture doesn't reveal itself completely, but gradually. This reminds me of different dramatic scenes where you get a look at some patterns on an object or human body as it is revealed to you gradually depends on lighting in the scenes or as you change angles or move through the scene. This type of visual design creates tension and anticipation and enhances engagement.
It's like an animal coming out from a dense forest in low lighting conditions, where you first get to see the eyes, then slowly it's entire body and identity is revealed. This effect also reminded me of the scene in the movie Twilight, where Edward reveals his Vampire's skin to Bella up on the mountain where the sun shines through. Bella watched his skin and says:
"It's like diamonds... You're beautiful.", and Edward replied: "This is the skin of a killer, Bella.".
'Techgnosis' visuals look mysterious, it is complimenting the skin, beautifying it, yet creates an unconventional and mysterious look that also resembles that idea behind the connection between technology in relation to religious imagination, It also sparks the thoughts that came to me after seeing the movie Matrix—questioning our reality and asking myself: "Is it all real, what is real?" and other questions related to our existence and the way we perceive what we called "reality".
Techgnosis filter definitely delivers a thought-provoking and mesmerizing visual experience that goes beyond just its vibrant and aspiring look. It penetrated the mind and proffers a path to some interesting questions and also might offer some hints on where you can actually find some answers. Sometimes it's interesting thinking about that no matter how many answers we get, we still won't get a decisive answer that will completely satisfy us and the hunger for discovery, knowledge, facts, and faith hunts many of us as we search for the explicitly untold truth.
On another aspect, it also made me think about the building blocks of our universe, how understanding those might help us understand the bigger picture. It wants me to continue the search for answers and plainly showed me that the answers are right in front of me, and the question is how to use the knowledge and supernatural understandings in order to get, not an answer, but maybe a clearer picture of my reality. A partial answer that might satisfy the need to get immediate answers, as I might not get it in my entire life.
'Technosis filter is like a bright light that lights up the path for a different understanding. It offers you something different and let you decide if this is the path you want to believe in. It's a mysterious act, capsulated and delivered in a beautiful and fascinating way as an AR face mask. It captivated me from the very beginning and even as I am writing these lines, I am still in deep thoughts that will probably go beyond after I finished interacting with this filter.
A fantastic Instagram face mask that I recommend everyone trying. Thank you Johanna Jaskowska for making it.
